Homeschooling Hobbies!

From the Editor!
James Carter was a farmer that fought in the Civil War. He got shot in the neck. The bullet was never removed. He lived almost 30 years with it lodged there. Have you heard of him?

What about Dr. William Burch? He was a doctor that graduated from Johns Hopkins University. Around 1860, he started a horseback medical practice throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Or Edith Dial? She had a tragic life. She was born into a large family, 10 siblings. Her mother, father, and 7 of her siblings died of Tuberculosis before she had turned 16. After delivering her fourth child, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

This is probably not information that you have come across before. I hadn’t until a few years ago when I was researching my family history. It is a hobby I started.

Why do I share this with you? After last summer, when my youngest ran around asking if yet another picture I found was her great, great, great, great, great, great, great, grandmother and my oldest asked if we could go to a random cemetery that we passed on the highway, I realized how much of my interests were affecting their interests.

What great opportunities for genuine history lessons! If you are interested in genealogy, click here for a free online family tree: Family Tree. And check out our "This Week in History" section to see information about the first US census.

What are your hobbies? How can you get your kids involved?

Have fun,
Bethany

Tips and Tricks!
Book of Animals

Children love learning about nature and animals. All of our animal books have bent covers and worn pages from the countless readings they are subject to. This gave me the idea to start a book of animals. This is an easy project to start on a snowy, rainy, or any day. Then anytime that you have a spare hour or two, you can just keep adding pages.

1. I start out with a binder, alphabet tabs, and plastic page covers. On the binder, I put a title, “Book of Animals.”

2. Then I choose the animal I’m going to start with. It is a good idea to begin with animals your child is very interested in. I recommend making one page at a time with one animal per page. We usually make the pages front and back.

3. Once you’ve chosen your animal, you need to start to research about the animal with your child. I like to go to the library and load up on books about the particular animal. Once we’ve gotten our books, we spend some time reading about the animal. Then we do some research on the internet. My favorite sites are listed below.

4. Finally, we choose some pictures from the internet, in a book we’ve bought that wasn’t very expensive, or from old magazines. We put them in random places on the page, leaving plenty of room for the new facts. I try to use about 3 pictures per animal depending on their size.

5. Then we add the important facts about the animal that we want to remember. We slide them into their plastic covers. Then we repeat this as many times as we can.

6. All that’s left is to read it and enjoy.

Occasionally, my kids will ask questions about the animals that aren’t on our pages, so we look them up and add them. For example, we made a penguin page a few months back. After we read it one day a week or so ago, she asked what penguins eat. So we looked it up and found out that they eat several things, but they especially like krill. After adding that fact to our penguin page, we had to make a page about krill.

A Message From The Publisher...

Hi Fellow Parents!

Welcome back to the newsletter. It's been busy lately, this time of year finds a lot of children being pulled out of public schools. So if you know any parents who are new to homeschooling, lend a hand, and ease their anxiety!

Plus, guess who's birthday is this week? Yup, Doctor Seuss! Almost all reading programs, including things like the Writing Road To Reading use those books are early readers. So to honor the doctor, we've included a link to the official Seussville. That site also happens to have a collection of excellent reading games for your child to play. It's certainly worth a visit.

Another great resource I found was Baseball Math. What's really great about this online math game is that you can play it two player. This means you can play with your child, they can play with a friend, or a sibling (carefully ;-) That makes it all the more fun, and anything that makes learning more fun = GOOD.

Also this week honors the Battle of The Alamo. So there are some great historic sites and lesson plans.

PLUS Don't Miss This Really Great Deal!

Be sure to check out Free Homeschool FunKits. These are designed to perk up your teaching. You can use them to add a little fun or spice to your curriculum, or even as a treat.

Thanks so much, and as always, enjoy your time with your kids. Time is fleeting and kids grow *FAST*

Sincerely,

Bonnie Han,
Publisher.

Special Midweek Mailing

Home Schooling
Another Wonderful Day!

It used to be that every morning was filled with getting lunches ready, screaming for kids to get dressed, get stuff ready for school...

Did you eat your breakfast...
Hope you at least got one of the food groups covered...
Do you have socks and underwear on?
Oh, I forgot you’re not 2 anymore...

Well, you can imagine the chaos with four kids. It wasn’t your typical June Cleaver type of household, that’s for sure.

Once the kids were gone, I could breath until the laundry pile called out to me. Next came the pile of dirty dishes, and get hubby out the door to work.

Then I got that dreaded C word... yes Cancer.

My whole world, and that of my children got turned upside down. Then came the whole Terry Fox story, and one of my sons decided I was going to die while he was away at school. So after many attempts to help him work through this, to no avail, we all just stayed home.

And guess what? As we have breakfast together every morning, and I get a million kisses, every sacrifice is worth it to see their happy little faces as I no longer yell for everything to get done.

Homeschooling was the best choice I ever made. I love our days together, and I have discovered that I really do like my children. Not just because they are mine, but because they are all unique, and so much fun to spend time with. I now know who they are. And as the papers and books over take the living room, the quietness and peacefulness that comes along with it is well appreciated.

So whoever invented HOMESCHOOLING, THANKS from all of us over here in our little corner for Another Wonderful Day!

-Joy Carr-

    A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR:
I have signs up all around my house saying “I am grateful.” But when things get hectic, I still forget. It takes a story like this, and someone like Joy to remind us all, Every Day Is A Gift, and thank God for just Another Wonderful Day!

    -Bonnie-

Hi!

Please tell as many friends and homeschool groups as you can about HomeschoolSoup.com. We are going to publish a book called Homemade Soup For Homeschoolers. You can read about it at HomeschoolSoup.com. It’s designed to be an inspirational book with stories about homeschoolers, from homeschoolers.

  • It’s for experienced homeschoolers to help remind us why we go through all this stuff.
  • It’s for new homeschoolers who are scared to death (remember those days :-)  to encourage them to keep on going.
  • It’s for people considering homeschooling to give them a glimpse into the life of homeschooling and to encourage them to take the plunge.

Each week about this time I will send out one of the stories in this Email. So be sure to keep an eye out for it in your Inbox! Here are some of the categories we will be covering:

  • Why We Homeschool: Thoughts From Mom and Dad.
  • Thank You Mom and Dad: Gratitude From Children
  • What The Children Have Taught Me
  • It Was All Worth Homeschooling Because...
  • I Was Homeschooled All My Life and Now I Am...
  • Encouragement
  • Love
  • Gratitude
  • Persistence/Perseverance
  • With God’s Help
  • Socialization

But I need your help! If you have any stories, please send them in. Also, please forward this email to homeschoolers and homeschool groups you know about. The more input we can get the better the whole project will be. Thank you so much for all the help and encouragement all of you have given in the past!

Thanks so much, and as always, enjoy your time with your kids. Time is fleeting and kids grow *FAST*

Sincerely,

Bonnie Han,
Publisher.
